Little Post About EPIC
I feel like someone has already noticed this, but I've not found anyone.
Anyone notice how Jorge uses handpans in Love in Paradise and Not Sorry for Loving You? It adds to the tropical soundscape and the hollow timbre contributes to the 'hollow peace' that Ody probably feels; he's not in any imminent danger, unlike almost every other moment in the past 13 years, yet there's no way he'd let himself relax. However, given how intention Jorge has been with these choices, I feel that the handpans (percussion instruments) are a deliberate call back to the mallet instruments of Open Arms. And the more lively mallets shows how authentic Polites' optimism is, when compared to Calypso's rather, well, hollow and metallic happiness. Does anyone know if this has been officially confirmed? Also, what are some little details that you've all noticed that you haven't seen? Or even some that you've seen but don't think have been emphasized enough?

Finally got around to drawing a ref of my main sky OCs! A.K.A The Hertz siblings :3 Written information below:
Xeikthyr: A skykid full of wonders, Always venturing lands and realms to discover many things and put them in their personal journal. They fear nothing, danger is their friend. Indeed, Pretty impulsive and takes challenges on a whim. Along their journey, Xeikthyr makes maps of the places they have visitied. Since they lose their memories every now and then, they try their best to put as many things as they can in their journal. Aside from that, they enjoy playing their handpan and piano. As well as being a local cryptid that fools around.
Though sociable and playful, they have a hard time trying to read the mood as well as empathising with others. Even so, they are a very compassionate sky kid to the point of selflessness, that is to the point of sacrificing themself. They don’t really see the point of death if they were to live again so Xeikthyr doesn’t see it as a big deal.
To them, memories are like falling flower petals. Object permanence doesn't seem to be a concept to them. They don't bother to search for a cure (or do they always forget to search for one?) But deep down, they would love to always remember friends and feel how it is to develop a long lasting bond with friends. Unbeknownst to them, Xeikthyr is gradually starting to preserve some memories.
Despite this, their memories resurface in abstract ways in their dreams, as if they're playing another person's life. Heithrun: A charismatic figure who seems to be almost perfect in everything. They're passionate when it comes to helping other skykids. Guiding moths through the realm, scrouging through prophecy trials, helping skykid to eden, etc. They love meeting with people after all.
Despite all of this, he's mostly a solo traveler, only meeting others in an chance encounter. He isn't quite a fan of forming deeper bonds due to general mistrust of people and having a high standard. And those high standard he sets to himself, making him a perfectionist. Sometimes he overworks himself. Their sibling Xeikthyr and their partner are the only people he trusts.
In contrast to Xeikthyr's forgetfulness, Heithrun has eidetic memory so she remembers everything down to the littlest detail. Not only that, she's also observant and analytical. She's an expert on routing and playing music due to this. Favourite "instrument" is voice of aurora.

Mastering Handpan Techniques: A Beginner’s Guide to Beautiful Sounds
Learning to play the handpan is a journey of discovering new sounds and rhythms. With its beautiful, resonant tones, the handpan offers limitless opportunities to create music. In this guide, we’ll cover some key playing techniques that can elevate your skills and enrich your music. Whether you’re playing on a Handpan 10 Notes model, exploring the uplifting C Major Handpan, or practicing on a Stainless Steel Handpan tuned to Handpan 440 Hz or Handpan 432 Hz, these techniques will help you unlock the full potential of this unique instrument.
Core Handpan Playing Techniques
Basic Strike Start with the basics by mastering a light, controlled strike. Use your fingertips, and keep your hand relaxed to achieve a clear, resonant tone. This technique is essential, whether you’re working on a Handpan 10 Notes or C Major Handpan, as it forms the foundation of every piece you’ll play.
Playing the Rim Striking the rim can produce softer, percussive sounds that add layers to your music. This technique works well on any handpan, including the Stainless Steel Handpan, as it emphasizes the metal’s unique resonance. Experiment with rim strikes using different fingers to create varied effects and deepen your sound.
Alternating Hands for Rhythmic Flow Alternating hands is essential for maintaining rhythm and adding speed to your playing. Play a note with your right hand, then switch quickly to your left. This technique keeps your rhythm steady and allows for fast, lively passages. Try practicing this on a C Major Handpan tuned to Handpan 432 Hz for a soothing, balanced sound.
Exploring Dynamics Dynamics allow you to express emotions in your music. Start by practicing soft taps and then increase your strike intensity to bring out louder notes. This adds depth and complexity to your music. A Stainless Steel Handpan will enhance dynamic play due to its clear tonal response, making each dynamic shift more expressive.
Intermediate Techniques to Add Depth
Mute Technique Muting involves lightly pressing down on a note immediately after striking it to create a dampened, staccato sound. This technique is perfect for rhythmic play or percussive elements. Start by striking a note, then quickly press your finger down to muffle it. Muting is especially effective on Handpan 10 Notes models, as it allows you to explore rhythm on multiple notes.
Damping for Silence and Rhythm Damping, which silences a note completely, adds crispness and contrast to your playing. To dampen, strike a note and then immediately press down to stop the sound. This technique can create precise, rhythmic accents, especially useful when playing a Handpan 440 Hz for its crisp, modern sound.
Combining Techniques for Unique Soundscapes The real magic comes when you start combining techniques. For example, try alternating between muted and unmuted notes, or add rim strikes into your melody. Mixing different dynamics, hand alternation, and damping techniques will give you a rich variety of tones, ideal for personalizing your music.
Choosing Your Handpan Tuning
Handpans are often tuned to either Handpan 440 Hz or Handpan 432 Hz, each bringing a different vibe to your music.
Handpan 440 Hz: Known as the modern standard, 440 Hz tuning offers clarity and precision. This is the choice for players who enjoy a sharper, well-defined sound, especially in ensemble settings.
Handpan 432 Hz: 432 Hz tuning is favored for its perceived healing and calming effects. Known as the “natural” tuning, it offers a slightly softer sound that many find ideal for meditation and solo play.
For those looking to explore high-quality sound and craftsmanship, the MiSoundofNature Handpan offers a beautifully crafted, well-tuned option for players of all levels.
Practice Tips for Consistent Improvement
Set a Routine: Daily practice builds muscle memory and strengthens technique. Set aside at least 15-20 minutes each day to focus on individual techniques and songs.
Listen and Learn: Listening to experienced handpan players gives you inspiration and shows you new ways to apply techniques. Try playing along or mimicking the style of different artists to expand your musical understanding.
Record Your Sessions: Recording allows you to review your sound and notice areas for improvement. You’ll also be able to hear your progress over time, which can be incredibly motivating.
Bringing it All Together: Crafting Your Own Sound
Handpan playing is a deeply personal journey. By mastering these core techniques and exploring advanced methods, you’ll start to develop a unique sound that reflects your own musical style. Try combining elements from each technique to find what resonates most with you. Playing a Handpan 10 Notes or C Major Handpan tuned to Handpan 440 Hz or Handpan 432 Hz will reveal new tonal possibilities as you experiment. Let your creativity flow, enjoy each practice session, and keep exploring the beautiful sounds of the handpan.

Allora

A while back @just-a-cup-of-anxietea left and open tag, and since she mentioned me in there I thought I might do it as well!
Do you play an instrument?
I don't know how to play any instruments. I am learning how to play the handpan, mostly because my brother got one and I randomly found out you need zero musical skills and it's still fun. It's actually weirdly relaxing I am fidning out. But I wouldn't say I know how to play that I just have random fun with it.
Favourite book characters?
The Creature (Frankenstein), Biblo Baggins (The Hobbit), and I am surely forgetting about someone, as usual.
What's you start sign?
Cancer.
Favourite color schemes?
I tend to like darker shades of colours, so dark greens, but also dark reds. I have always been drawn to dark purples, blacks and greys. Overall I'd say that in the last few years I have been more and more drawn to earth colours so greens and browns, and I think that's because they feel like very relaxing colours to me (don't ask me why, I wuld have idea how to explain that).
What languages do you speak?
Italian, English, I understand French pretty well but I am not the best with speaking (I should definitely get back into practicing again), I had a very base of German but I have forgot quite a bit and again should get back into it a bit before I forget everything completly. And I am self studying Irish as a past time, but I am still at a very basic level, I wouldn't be able to hold a conversation yet.
Dream/aspiration?
Being genuinely happy and at peace. I don't have a dream job or life yet, being at peace with life would be enough.
Are you for short or long hair?
I am in my short hair era, but I love long hair, mostly because I love creating complicated braided haristyles. I need to get friends with long hair who will let me give them fantasy inspired hairstyles, okay? Personally I've had my hair very very long for most of my life and I am only now starting to experiment a bit with shorter haircuts, and I am having lots of fun with it. Getting my hair cut shorter is also helping me with experimenting and having fun with how I present, it somehow makes me feel more free especially when it comes to more feminine things. It's a complicated topic tho, this is not the place to get into it.
Tea or coffee?
Tea. Don't get me wrong I love coffee, but it gives me way too many anxiety problems, so I try to avoid it. On the other hand teas and herbal teas are the absolute love of my life, I mean I have a whole side of my garden dedicated to herbs I use for making teas.
Bring your favourite book character to real life, or will you go into a fictional world?
Get me to Middle Earth now, thanks bye. I just want to live like a hobbit, it would be a dream come true.
I am also leaving the tag open for this, but if you end up doing it tag me cause I'm nosy lmao.

• Do you play an instrument?
i've learned upwards of six or seven instruments but i get bored and move on often. i have a number of things that are tuned on a scale (harmonica, kalimba, handpan etc) which i bust out to play with the kid I babysit. if i had the wherewithal to save money for it i would get a harp. i also live with two musicians so i think there are probably over a dozen instruments in this house
• Favourite book characters?
i haven't been reading a ton of fiction lately. tenar from the earthsea series comes to mind.
• What’s your star sign?
Sagittarius
• Favourite colour schemes?
earth tones
• Naps or long sleep?
i wish i could successfully nap. if i try, i wake up 5 hours later frothy and disoriented
• What languages do you speak?
empire baby syndrome. english and some rusty spanish... i used to be fairly competent at it. been learning a few anishinaabemowin words and phrases with a cousin but it's a stretch to say i speak it.
• Dreams/aspirations?
when i get old i want a house near the appalachian trail where I run an inn for thru-hikers. i would be such a good innkeeper. and i want to keep sheep. i think eventually i'm going to get into making weird lamps. i'm not quite there yet but the interest is fermenting
• Long hair or Short Hair?
i had super long hair for years but it was too high-maintenance for me currently. gonna shave it off in the summer and start the cycle all over again.
• Tea or coffee?
tea
• Bring a book character to life or go into a fictional world?
oh shit i'm stealing sonny's answer...frog and toad world

Conclusion

How To Maintain Your Handpan, To Keep It Functional For a Prolonged Period
Taking care of and maintaining the musical instrument is essential to keep it functional for an extended period. A handpan is a melodic musical instrument that is mainly made up of steel. A well-made handpan delivers gentle and rhythmic styles. The most effective appeal of this instrument is that anyone can play it. No musical knowledge is required to play and enjoy a handpan; just a harmonious sense and little details will be suitable to play it expressively. Handpan is a mechanism that boosts, heals, and obtains peace for people in today's stressful lives.
Several names like hang drum, Cupola, Pantam, Sound Sculpture, UFO drums, etc., also known as Handpan. Today's interest is growing globally in Buying a Handpan because of its ethereal and enchanting sound. These instruments are rare and handcrafted and provide different functionality. The making of this instrument takes hundreds of hours and thousands of hammers. If you care for your handpan, it will look good for a long time.
How To Maintain The Handpan?
After buying a handpan, it is essential to maintain it. Here are the top 3 ways to keep your instrument operational.
Cleaning Of Handpan
The skin's fats, salts, and acids accumulate on the handpan's surface as you play with your hands. These ought to be eradicated with high-proof cleansing alcohol at regular intervals of the day. Cleansing spirits, for example, isopropanol, is available in each pharmacy and numerous stores to prevent your handpan from getting scratched. After cleaning, always dry it and take care of it with a microfiber cloth.
Oiling
After each cleaning, the handpan should be oiled. A surface that shields your pan from salts, acids, and moisture is created when laying suitable handpan care oil. This guarantees that your instrument retains its original surface appearance for a long time and contains rusting and discoloration of the material. Use a very soft microfiber cloth to cleanse your handpan to avoid scratches.
Eliminating Rust
Always accumulate your handpan from the case and in an arid, sterile establishment to control rust. If you live in a damp area, pay attention to it. You can also utilize oil to keep it from rusting, but you should communicate with the seller before using it. In addition, the handpan undergoes a heat treatment known as nitriding. The handpan is maintained against rust by this procedure, but it does not render them immune to rust. Steel that has been heat-treated may conceive a very porous surface. The interaction makes the handpan to be more rust-proof than others.
Conclusion
Each handpan must be concentrated by what lies under the material texture for its maintenance. Steel always responds to salts, moisture, acids, air, and other substances, which can cause oxidizing, corrosion, and discoloration. As a result, cleaning your handpan regularly is highly suggested. Buying a Handpan is effortless, but retaining it is a difficult chore. But with proper maintenance, the expensive musical mechanism can deliver the usefulness of keeping it secure and functional.

There's a lot going on in my life and today has been hard, cos I spent all day fighting a mental breakdown. I mean, it was just a question of time, really. I've felt it coming for weeks. But I still wish I could feel something else.
So here's a diary entry in hopes of someday reading it and thinking "man, things have be shit but it turned out just fine after all."
In January I posted my to do list for 2024 here. More than half a year has passed since then and unfortunately nothing from this list is checked off and there has been gradually less good news to report with each new month.
All my life I have never had the stamina to learn an instrument. When I stumbled across Handpans, the opportunity arose to change that. I've since been to two beginner workshops and the organizer was gracious enough to lend me a handpan for a month. I was really motivated to follow through with his 17-days-challenge because I knew if I could manage to play every day, even if it was just a few minutes, I had a real chance of forming a habit and finally fulfilling my dream of mastering an instrument. But my days were long. I set up the handpan a few times at ten o'clock at night or even later, completely exhausted. And then came the executive dysfunction. Every day I see her standing there. Every day I want to play it. Every day something in my head blocks me of setting it up. The fear of having to explain to Pierre that I've only played it 5 times this month eats away at me. I want to play. But I can't. And in four days, the month will be over and I'll have to give it back. He'll then ask me if Handpan isn't for me after all. And I'll say: "Yes, it is. It makes me happy. It's fun. It's healing something inside of me. I can let go of the world when I'm just playing for myself. But my broken ADHD brain won't let me and I don't have the money to buy my own and stash it in the closet for the few times a year that I have the strenght to set it up and play." It feels like losing. Like I missed my one chance for something great, that could've changed me for the better.
When I moved into the house, I had these fantasies of sitting at my desk in my tidy, light-filled beautiful room. Drawing digitally, writing, singing. Painting on canvas and composing music. But my aunt interfered in my life and the building site has been frozen ever since. I live between masking film and plaster dust. I've been incapacitated and feel so powerless and helpless. I want progress. And I want my art back.
And then there's the matter of the dog. That goddamn dog Kröte. My colleague told me there's a technical term for when you make a terribly bad financial decision and then cling to it, pouring more and more money and resources into it in the desperate hope of turning it around. She couldn't remember the term, tho. I could be so happy with just my own dog, but instead I've brought this beast into the house. Because of which my own dog has to spend every day alone at home and because of which my neighbors hate me. Because of which my house stinks of piss and because of which my ears are ringing with barking.
My car has been giving me problems since September last year. I've lost track of how many thousands of euros I've spent trying to get the recurring fault fixed. Something between 4500-6000 euros. Most recently it was in the workshop for a month. What's more, after every repair, another new fault occurs. I can't take any more. Emotionally and financially. My aunt's friend is urging me to take it back to his garage. But I thought I'd made myself clear when I said "if it's not fixed this time, I'll keep driving it until the engine fails and I break down." I was supposed to bring my car over today. Which of course I wasn't told directly again, but via the old game of wisper down the lane. Which I said before I will not accept any longer. I put my cell phone on airplane mode afterwards. I can't do it anymore. It's Saturday and I finally needed a day off. I've been borrowing spoons from the future for days - my body told me very clearly that I had overspent.
Things aren't going well at work either. It's not news that we're bankrupt. But the way our bosses and colleagues treat us graphic designers is now unacceptably disrespectful. I am the only employee left who is still interested in contributing her own ideas in order to offer the company advantages and new opportunities. That makes me stand out - in a negative way. Because thinking along might officially be required, but since it also shows where the problems lie, it's actually unwanted. The very real fear of losing my job while being in debt so badly is gnawing on me every day. I am on the hit list. They just need me to finish a few projects first.
Despite all this I cling to hope.

Exploring the Art of the Handpan: A Journey into Sound, Materials, and Tuning
The handpan, an instrument as mesmerizing as its sound, has captivated musicians and listeners around the world. Known for its unique shape and ethereal tones, the handpan allows players to create ambient, meditative music that resonates deeply within the soul. But before diving into playing, it's essential to explore the art behind the handpan, especially when it comes to the materials used and tuning preferences, such as 432Hz and 440Hz. In this post, we'll delve into the various types of handpan materials—Ember Steel, Nitriding Steel, and Stainless Steel—and their influence on the handpan sound. Plus, we’ll introduce you to Hluru.shop, a brand that offers quality handpans crafted with attention to detail.
1. The Magic of Handpan Materials: Ember Steel, Nitriding Steel, and Stainless Steel
One of the most fascinating aspects of the handpan is the material used in its construction. The type of steel directly impacts the tonal characteristics, durability, and overall experience of the instrument. Let's take a closer look at three popular materials used in handpan creation:
Ember Steel Handpan: Known for its warm, rich sound, Ember Steel is a type of carbon steel that is carefully tempered to produce deep, resonant tones. The warmth of Ember Steel is ideal for players who want a handpan that offers a more organic, expressive sound. This material is favored by musicians seeking an instrument that provides a deep, immersive experience. The Ember Steel handpan is perfect for creating calm, meditative sounds that resonate with both the player and the listener.
Nitriding Steel Handpan: Nitriding Steel undergoes a treatment process that enhances its durability and resistance to corrosion. The process of nitriding involves infusing nitrogen into the steel, making it stronger while maintaining its rich tonal qualities. A Nitriding Steel handpan retains much of the warmth and resonance found in Ember Steel, but with the added benefit of being more resilient to wear and tear. This makes it a great choice for musicians who need an instrument that can withstand the demands of travel and performance.
Stainless Steel Handpan: Known for its brightness and clarity, Stainless Steel handpans produce a clearer, more precise tone compared to other materials. While they may not offer the deep warmth of Ember Steel, Stainless Steel handpans have their own charm, providing a bright and clear sound that is ideal for more melodic and rhythmic playing. Additionally, stainless steel offers the advantage of being highly resistant to rust, making it a practical choice for those who live in humid climates or travel frequently.
Each of these materials brings its own unique flavor to the handpan, allowing players to choose the sound that best fits their musical style and needs.
2. Tuning Your Handpan: 432Hz vs. 440Hz
When it comes to tuning, handpans are often tuned to either 432Hz or 440Hz. The difference between these two frequencies is subtle but significant, and understanding how they impact the sound of your handpan is crucial.
432Hz: Often referred to as the "natural tuning," 432Hz is believed by many to be in harmony with the universe and the natural frequencies of the earth. Some players claim that music tuned to 432Hz has a calming, healing effect and resonates deeply with the listener's soul. The 432Hz handpan is often associated with more meditative, tranquil sounds, making it a popular choice for players interested in creating ambient music or using the handpan for meditation and relaxation.
440Hz: This tuning is the standard tuning for most musical instruments worldwide, and it's the pitch to which orchestras and other musicians typically tune. A 440Hz handpan produces a sharper, more conventional sound, making it ideal for players who prefer a more defined, clear tone. While some may argue that 440Hz is less natural than 432Hz, it’s still a popular tuning for handpan players, particularly those who perform in group settings or with other musicians.
Whether you choose 432Hz or 440Hz, each tuning brings its own unique quality to the sound of your handpan. The decision ultimately depends on your personal preferences and the type of music you wish to create.
